Underpainting
The hardest part of this challenge was separating a focal point -- the central tree complex -- from the background. Using a limited palette of colors, the variations in greens and blue are not easily managed into separable layers. The key tactic? Cool colors recede; warm colors advance. That is the way to separate layers and create aerial perspective.
Although in the source photo the central focal point was sort of blurred into the background, I tried to make the painted one--the focal point--pop away from the rear tree line with warmer, brighter, more vibrant colors and greater detail.
Nonetheless, it is a challenge; certainly it helps exercise the abilities in using green in a landscape setting.
